Argentina defeated Belgium 1-0 on Saturday in the World Cup quarterfinals match. The win sends Argentina to the semifinals of the tournament, where the will face the winner of the Netherlands and Costa Rica's match later today.

Gonzalo Higuain scored for Argentina in the 8th minute after hard work by his teammate Lionel Messi kept possession and helped set him up.

Argentina played a defensively sound game for almost the full 90 minutes, leaving Belgium frustrated and unwilling to generate opportunities. In stoppage time at the end of the second half, Belgium had a few good chances but were still unable to score. Messi also had a chance to give Argentina a 2-0 lead but was denied by Belgium's goalkeeper. 

It has been 24 years since Argentina last made the semifinals at the World Cup. Argentina was one of the founding members of the original World Cup in 1930 along with Belgium.
