Since last Friday, three professional North American sports championships have been won in a Game 5, beginning with the Los Angeles Kings clinching the Stanley Cup in overtime on a goal from Jazzhands Martinez and again in Game 5 of the NBA Finals when the San Antonio Spurs won the Title in an emotional and entertaining dismantling of the Miami Heat. The trend continued on Tuesday night when the AHL Calder Cup championship was clinched by the Texas Stars on an overtime goal by Swedish prospect Patrik Nemeth. Here is the goal - it was a beauty:

The final score was 4-3. It was the first Calder Cup championship in Texas Stars history. It was the third straight game in which overtime was required to decide the game; the previous two games saw the same player and eventual playoff MVP Travis Morin score the overtime game winners

See below for some more GIFs from the celebration of the Stars championship. Congratulations to both the Texas Stars and a formidable opponent in the St. John's IceCaps!

Stars goaltender Nilstorp on a search & destroy with hugs mission. He was outstanding in the series, as was IceCaps goalie Michael Hutchinson

The IceCaps remained on the ice to watch the Stars skate the Calder Cup, which was pretty neat.

All in al, it was a fantastically exciting game - and series - and further proves what an asset the AHL is. More importantly, SHAME ON YOU NHL NETWORK! Press releases prior to the start of the series promised the airing of game 5 live on NHL Network. That never happened.

Anyway, congrats again to these two great AHL teams and their NHL affiliates that have bright futures ahead - the Dallas Stars and Winnipeg Jets!
