Serena Williams was battling windy conditions and an opponent who both knows her well (they practice together) and was playing some great tennis. Williams beat Varvara Lepchenko 6-3, 6-3. Serena had only three aces than Lepchenko's six, and only 14 winners to Lepchenko's 24. She did win more rallies and first serve points, which were keys to the match.
Williams, the number one seed in the tournament, has won the last two straight US Opens and was runner-up three years ago. She showed a lot of emotion throughout the match, clearly more motivated to win after poor showings in the previous three Grand Slam tournaments this year.
Serena will face Kaia Kanepi in the fourth round. She is also still in the Women's Doubles with her sister Venus Williams, who was eliminated early from the Women's Singles competition.
