27-year-old, 23rd-seeded Czech Lucie Safarova defeated 22nd-seeded Ekaterina Makarova swiftly in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon on Tuesday to advance to her first Major semifinal. She is the first woman through to the semifinal, as rain delays have kept other ladies' matches in the quarterfinals. Safarova's previous best showing at a Major was the quarterfinals of the Australian Open in 2007.

Safarova awaits the winner of the all-Czech quarterfinal matchup between 6th-seeded Petra Kvitova and Barbara Zahlavova Strycova. This guarantees an all-Czech semifinal match on the bottom half of the ladies' bracket. With Kerber's defeat of Sharapova earlier today, Kvitova is the only player left that has won a Major title before. She won Wimbledon in 2011.
