On day 5 of action at the US Open, Roger Federer advanced to the third round with a straight-sets victory over Australian Sam Groth, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4

Federer showed his usual brilliance at times, such as one long rally in which he finished off with a perfectly placed overhead after being on the defensive. It was enough to elicit an excited response from Roger among cheers from the crowd.

Federer also had an instance in which he nearly hit a ball boy with an errant return, but all was well:

Federer will face Marcel Granollers of Spain in the third round.

In a pre-match interview with ESPN, the 2nd seeded Federer talked about several topics, including his desire to win an 18th title. When asked about it, he said:

It would be great, you know. I mean, I love 18. I like 17, but I like 18 better, you know? It was the same when I was growing up - 18 was better than 17, you know. It's a big deal in Europe, or in Switzerland for that matter but no, I'm trying hard, you know. I'll give it everything I have. And we'll see.

Federer was then shown a poll on the screen from ESPN voters number over 10,000 in which 84% believed he would win an 18th title. His response:

There we go, I like that. Thank you for believing.

I think I would have to vote "yes" as well.
